Can hydroxyapatite build up or repair tooth enamel?
Hydroxyapatite cannot rebuild worn-away enamel or repair larger defects in the enamel . However, nano-hap particles can selectively integrate themselves into the finest irregularities and microcracks of the enamel , contributing to a smoother surface . Furthermore, it supports the natural remineralization of the enamel and makes the surface more resistant ( Huang 2019 ).*
Is hydroxyapatite a good alternative to fluoride toothpaste, gels, or mouthwash for caries prevention?
Yes, hydroxyapatite is considered the most proven fluoride alternative . It remineralizes tooth enamel and not only hardens it like fluoride. Studies show a comparable effect in caries prevention ( Najibfard 2011 , Bossù 2019 ).
Are there any side effects of hydroxyapatite?
No harmful side effects of hydroxyapatite are currently known. It is the same calcium phosphate compound that makes up over 90% of our teeth and bones . Therefore, the active ingredient is considered naturally biocompatible and particularly well-tolerated.
Hydroxyapatite has been used successfully in dentistry for over 40 years – originally developed for NASA to prevent bone and enamel loss in astronauts in space. Today, it is considered the most proven fluoride alternative in dental care.
